The White Apple Company provides a high quality Guardianship service for students attending British boarding schools whose parents live abroad. We create a strong working relationship between the parents, students, schools and host families to give you, the parent, peace of mind and a confident knowledge that your child is safe and well cared for whilst with us in the UK.
British Schools offer an excellent education that is recognised throughout the world. Many parents offer a unique opportunity and a life changing experience to their children by having them educated in Britain. Most British independent schools insist that children from overseas should have a legal Guardian in this country who accepts responsibility for the student, and require all international students under the age of 18 to have a Guardian aged over 25 resident in the UK.
We know from our own experience how strange and new everything feels for children when they first arrive in the UK and how important it is to feel supported and secure. The White Apple Company understands that your child’s adaptation can be made so much more easily if you have somebody as a point of contact who knows your cultural background and speaks your language. We specialise in, but not limit ourselves to, Russian speaking countries and have staff members, including the managing director Dasha White, who speak Russian fluently.

WHY DO I NEED A GUARDIAN FOR MY CHILD?
The UK Border Agency states that for overseas students, “all children studying in the UK must have suitable care arrangements in place for their travel, reception at port and living arrangements while here”. British boarding schools require all international students to have a Guardian aged over 25 resident in the UK. Whilst the schools are responsible for your child’s welfare during the school term, there are many times either during the term, during the holidays or when your child is sick where the responsibility falls to the Guardian to take care for your child.
WHO WILL BE A GUARDIAN TO MY CHILD AND WHAT ARE THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES?
Guardians act on behalf of international pupils’parents while their children are in the UK. A guardian is a British citizen who has passed a police criminality check carried out by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) to ensure safety to the public.
All our Guardians are carefully chosen by The White Apple Company and have met strict accreditation requirements.
Guardians – whether an individual or a family – have a responsibility to support the students in their care in ways that help them to thrive and make the most of their time at a UK boarding school.
The Guardian acts as a link for the student: someone who will take an interest in their work and progress, who will attend parents’meetings (and report back to parents abroad afterwards), and also is a vital point of contact for the school –for example, in an emergency where a student falls ill and needs to be away from school for a time, and is unable to return home. The Guardian will be expected to help out with medical and possibly insurance arrangements, and to keep in close touch with the school.
The Guardian will also be someone with whom the student can get in touch at any time, whether to talk about a problem that may have arisen, or simply to discuss travel arrangements, for example, for the end of term, when a student may stay overnight with the Guardian before the long journey home. Above all, the Guardian will do everything possible, as will the school, to safeguard and promote the student’s welfare, and this alone should help to set parents’minds at rest.
During term time, the school has responsibility for day-to-day care, as well as for the academic and social development of your child.
WHAT IS A HOST FAMILY?
There might be occasions when your child needs to stay somewhere for some time whilst the school is closed. If your Guardian is unable to accommodate your child, we will recommend a carefully selected Host Family. In other words, Host Families take over responsibility for day-to-day care whilst your child is staying with them at times when the school is closed.
As The White Apple Company is very familiar with the Host Families, the most practical solution is to match the child with the most suitable family through our selection criteria. Host Families are required to provide details of their family members, their occupation, interests, pets and other information to determine their suitability for hosting students. All our Host Families are carefully selected, regularly visited and they are warm and caring, which is very important for the welfare of your child. All of our families have enhanced Criminal Bureau Check (known as Police Check). Full details of the Host Family will be available to the parents along with all other information and contact details.
WHY NOT USE A FRIEND OR RELATIVE AS A GUARDIAN?
The Guardian has an important responsibility and must be available to help and provide safe and appropriate accommodation for your child immediately in the event of an emergency. Friends and relatives may not always be available and it may not be convenient for them to provide accommodation for your child in their own home when needed. In addition, friends and relatives may not be familiar with the UK education system and don’t have a deep knowledge of British culture and therefore may not be the best people to advise your child.
WHO WILL MEET MY CHILD AT THE AIRPORT?
The White Apple Company manager or in some cases your child’s Guardian will meet your son/daughter at the airport of arrival and take them to their boarding school. We will introduce your child to the appropriate school staff and help them settle. Some schools offer a shuttle service for their international students. Parents often choose to have their children travel as ‘unaccompanied minors’which means they are looked after by the airline and released only to the company representative who must be carrying all the correct identification.
MY CHILD IS RESPONSIBLE, INDEPENDENT AND CAN LOOK AFTER HIMSELF – DO I REALLY NEED A GUARDIAN?
Yes as it’s a legal requirement. More than that, even the most sensible children can and do encounter problems from time to time and can benefit from the help of a professional, caring Guardian.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD FALLS ILL?
All boarding schools have an in-house nurse and medical centre to care for the students. In case of serious illness or injury, your child’s Guardian will contact parents of the child and keep them updated with the child’s state of health. The Guardian will also help your child to get registered with the local National Health Service doctor.
WHO MONITORS MY CHILD’S ACADEMIC PROGRESS?
The school provides regular written reports on their student’s academic progress. Usually there are three written academic reports a year, one at the end of each term, but the students are regularly assessed with grade marks for effort and achievement. At the end of the academic year there will be an annual parent-teacher meeting. The Guardian will attend this meeting on behalf of the parents and acquire a full written academic report which will be sent to the parents.
WHAT ABOUT SCHOOL DISCIPLINE?
Boarding schools have strict rules concerning discipline. As for us, regular discussions with the schools and parents ensure that discipline is tracked at all times and measures are taken before schools feel the need to administer stronger penalties. A student can be suspended from school for some days or even weeks if he/she is guilty of one of a number of serious offences, including bullying, smoking, drinking alcohol, taking or selling drugs or constant breaking of school rules. Should the student be excluded or suspended from the school for a period of time, arrangements will be put in place by a guardian to find a suitable host family for your child. We will discuss the matter in depth with the school and keep you informed of developments. If permanently excluded, we will assist with finding an alternative school or arrange for your child to return home.
HOW OFTEN WILL MY CHILD HAVE TO STAY WITH THE HOST FAMILY?
Most schools have two weekend breaks and a half term during each of the three terms. Typically this is when the student will stay with the Host Family although some students do fly home for the long half term break.
HOW OFTEN WILL A GUARDIAN MEET MY CHILD?
We will meet your child on the day of arrival and at least once a term or more often if required. We also keep in contact with your child by telephone and e-mail. We also encourage your child to contact their Guardian at any time should they require any assistance. We keep in close contact with our students, schools, parents and Host Families.
CAN THE WHITE APPLE COMPANY GIVE MY CHILD REGULAR POCKET MONEY?
Of course. For emergencies we encourage you to leave some money with us. Let us know when you want us to transfer the money to your child and we will do it happily. Also, we can help your child choose bank and open a current bank account.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY?In the case of emergencies we will liaise with you and with the school until the matter is resolved. Your child and you will have an emergency contact number.
WHAT IF I WOULD LIKE TO VISIT MY CHILD IN THE UK?You can visit your child any time. We will help you to find accommodation close to school. If you require a visa, The White Apple Company will provide you with the relevant documents to support your visa application.
