Individual General English course in a nutshell

General English course description

One-to-One English lessons living in your teacher's home is the most effective way to develop language skills in a short period of time.
You will be carefully matched to an experienced teacher, who knows your strengths and weaknesses and who can design and deliver a program to suit you.  You will be impressed at just how quickly your confidence grows as your English language skills improve, immersed in real-life situations and interactions within a wholly English speaking environment. No wonder why - you can practice English all day long!

You can choose to have 15, 20, 25 or 30 lessons per week with your own private host teacher (each lesson lasts 60 minutes). In addition, you would normally be given between one and two hours' work to prepare for the next day's lessons.

If you have a friend or a colleague whose standard of English and needs are similar to your own, two students can share the lessons for a considerably reduced cost. (Two-to-One courses).

On the first day, you will be given a level assessment and listening comprehension and your oral fluency will be assessed. The teacher will then design a Personal Study Plan with you to fulfil your objectives by making the most effective use of your lesson time. Outside of lessons you will have the opportunity to practice what you have learned. Your progress is monitored from day one and you receive regular feedback throughout your course.

General English course modules

There are four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking which need to be studied and developed right from the first level to achieve understanding and expression in authentic communicative situations.

Examples of the subjects covered in the lessons are:

- Grammar (forming words, sentence structure, spelling and word sounds). Not in the form of strict rules, but through communication and practice.
- Everyday situations which you will encounter during your stay in England such as meeting people, telephone conversations etc.
- Vocabulary and idiomatic expressions
- Styles of language use; when a particular use of language is acceptable
- Cultural factors such as the meaning of words in different contexts; the gestures and body language which accompany and influence communication
- Language use

The main emphasis of these lessons is placed on the development of communication skills in spoken and written present-day English.
Structures and vocabulary are adapted to the lower levels and become progressively more complex. At advanced levels different types of text are used to encourage the recognition and reproduction of different language styles.

Your teacher

We place great emphasis on our selection of teachers. We look for well-educated, motivated, interesting people who will be capable of motivating all their students. They must be fully qualified and be experienced in working with foreign students. Our teachers have prepared themselves for their inter-cultural task through intensive studies, they have been trained in both traditional and more modern teaching methods, and frequently use role-play, rhythm excercises and word games.
You will find the teachers friendly but efficient, and capable of responding to your particular learning requirements. Throughout your course, your teacher will be a supportive, understanding guide to the learning process who will monitor your progress and create opportunities for practice in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.

Your accommodation

You will be living in your teacher’s home, in a separate single / twin bedroom in a well maintained family house. You can expect a clean, safe and pleasant home, three healthy meals a day, laundry, telephone, television, etc, and most importantly - a friendly, supportive and English-speaking environment.
While living with a hosting family, students will be encouraged to participate in day-to-day family life and learn about British culture.

FCE Cambridge First Certificate in English is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level. It is an ideal exam for people who want to use English for work or study purposes. Pass this test and everybody knows you have an acceptable level of English. You can operate effectively in a business or social context.
The First Certificate in English is the most important of the Cambridge exams. Test difficulty level: Upper Intermediate

CAECambridge Advanced English is taken by more than 60,000 people each year in more than 60 countries. CAE is an exam for advanced users of English. This exam is aimed at people who can use written and spoken English for most professional and social purposes. It is widely recognised for work or study purposes. If you can communicate with confidence in English for work or study purposes, this is the exam for you. Our course places a strong emphasis on vocabulary, collocation and idiom. Test difficulty level: Advanced

CPE Cambridge Proficiency English -  is Cambridge ESOL's most advanced exam. It is aimed at people who use English for professional or study purposes.
CPE certificate is valid for life, and you never need to take the exam again. CPE's 'Can Do' skills give you the confidence to use English in real situations.
CPE Cambridge Proficiency English is at Level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) — an internationally recognised benchmark of language ability. The framework uses six levels to describe language ability from A1 to C2. 'Can Do' statements have been used to describe these levels in terms of real skills with language.

IELTS International English Language Testing System - it's the world's leading test of English for higher education, immigration and employment.
Over 1.2 million candidates take the test each year to start their journeys into international education and employment. IELTS is recognised by more than 6000 institutions across 120 countries.
IELTS tests are guaranteed to show your true ability to communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking, in a way that is relevant to the real world. Candidates with high scores are particularly sought after by universities and employers in English-speaking countries.
IELTS is also used as proof of your language ability for immigration purposes. The UK Border Agency has announced that skilled workers can use IELTS results for the new UK points-based immigration system.

TOEIC Test of English for International Communication   - it's a test to measure the ability of non-native English-speaking examinees to use English in everyday workplace. It measures proficiency in international Business English, at the intermediate and advanced levels. The TOEIC Listening and Reading is a paper-based test that provides an accurate measurement of the English capabilities of non-native speakers in listening, reading, and grammar. The TOEIC Speaking and Writing test is an internet-based test that measures a person's ability to speak and write in English in the workplace, using key expressions and common, everyday vocabulary.
The inclusion of TOEIC scores on your CV, whether you are a student or professional, adds a dimension of international competitiveness. It facilitates your access to a wider job market, since companies often use TOEIC scores in their recruitment decisions; it is, hence, an essential tool for non-native speakers of English looking to improve their employability.

University Foundation Course (6 month or 9 month course: 15 or 30 lessons per week) - it's a comprehensive and stimulating course for overseas students who wish to study a business related degree at a British University.
